Its packaging, centred on silk satin which is a most representative element in eastern culture, aims to suggest that the products enable a silky smooth finish for the skin and convey Eastern aesthetics. The glossy top cover with three fluid lines fully replicates the lustrous silk satin. This, paired with a rounded shape, brings to mind the image of a moon reflected in water, highlighting the grace of eastern women. Products for different skin types are easily differentiated by varied elegant colors of the packaging.

Unique Properties

This cushion series is developed for eastern women. Its packaging, inspired by exquisite silk satin with flowing luster, aims to suggest that the products enable a silky smooth finish for the skin and convey Eastern poetic aesthetics. Three fluid undulating lines in the glossy top cover resemble fluttering silk satin, representing the makeup effect of the products. The rounded shape bring to mind the image of a luminous moon reflected in rippling water, showing the gentle beauty of women.

Production Technology

To fully replicate the luster of silk satin, the top cover adopts aluminum anodizing technology, representing the skin-brightening effect of the products. The surface of the base utilizes the injection molding and sandblasting process, to create a stark contrast with the glossy top cover, enriching the overall simple design with varied textures. The outer box employs traditional fabric applique technique and a poem that explains the product features, to further highlight Eastern aesthetics.

Design Challenge

The challenge lies in how to convey intangible eastern aesthetics in a tangible form to customers. Silk satin, a symbol in eastern culture known for its smooth and delicate texture, inspired the design team to create a lustrous shell. This, combined with simple wavy lines, leads to an effect reminiscent of flowing silk, which not only offers users a pleasurable visual experience, but also symbolizes that the products enable a silky smooth finish for the skin.

Project Duration

The packaging was designed in July, 2023 in Shanghai, and will be launched in March, 2024 in China.

Operation Flow

Unlike the square or circular designs of most cushion products on the market, this product series, based on ergonomics, adopts a flat oval cocoon shape with the moderate width to better fit the hand of eastern women for easy holding and makeup applying. The packaging can be unfolded to 120 degrees, which enables users to hold the products in a natural, relaxed manner. The undulating lines in the glossy top cover ensure that each touch feels like an intimate encounter with eastern aesthetics.

Research

Nowadays, cosmetic packaging is expected to evolve beyond mere practicality, focusing more on design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. In this trend, eastern aesthetics, capable of endowing products with visual allure, have become a new choice for designers. The packaging incorporates silk satin, an eastern element full of unique charm, which hopes that users can experience a close encounter with eastern aesthetics during its use.

Inspiration

The design team drew inspiration from smooth silk satin, taking the delicate texture and gentle lustre as the design core. Thanks to the unique shape and high-quality materials, the packaging features tactile and visual effect like silk satin, conveying the low-key yet luxurious eastern aesthetics. This also suggests that the products enable a silky smooth finish for the skin.
