Motion Graphic Design for The One Academy
A fan-made motion graphic project dedicated to Korean pop idol group BTS, 134340 is a short music video and visualizes the titular song of the same title. In response to the lyrics, the video redecorates dwarf planet Pluto as a white ball wanders through multiple dimensions of space. The music video captures a 2D effect art style known as Cel Shading and combines animations into the 3D elements. 134340 project was entirely crafted and composed in 3D software Cinema 4D in a span of 2 months.

Unique Properties
An ambitious fan made project, 134340 is a motion graphic based music video showcasing the song 134340 by international Korean pop idol group BTS from their third Korean studio album Love Yourself Tear in 2018. The song title is the asteroid number of dwarf planet Pluto which used to be the ninth planet in our Solar System. The project reimagines Pluto as a white ball wandering through multiple dimensions in space that surrounded by colorful 3D shapes to correspond with the track musical rhythm.

Production Technology
Designed entirely in Cinema 4D, 134340 fuses 3D polygons and with flat colors to bring out the simplicity of the design. The cameras and animation were done simply in 30fps without any plugins. The visual focuses on each shape's speeds and movements which were purposely designed for rhythmic fitting with the music. All object materials were produced in 2D cel shading, a cartoonish flat shading art style that can be achieved with Sketch and Toon Cel Shaders within Cinema 4D.
Design Challenge
There are limitations to what resources to experiment and compact with within the short period of time to complete a massive project. Also, not every art style compliments music the way it was intended to be in the first place and it is better to base on the audience perception instead of personal ones.
Project Duration
The project started in June 2019 in Kuala Lumpur and finished in mid-August 2019 in Selangor, and was exhibited in The One Gallery of The One Academy in late August until early September 2019.
Operation Flow
134340 music video was made primarily for the BTS fans known as ARMYs. Viewers are able to watch the white ball moving freely in spaces and dimensions while listening to the music in the video. Both Korean and English lyrics were put for viewers to understand the meaning of the song. Another operation is to strategize 134340 by submitting the video to the idol agency company, BigHit Entertainment YouTube channel as an act of mock partnership or potential creative collaboration in business.
Research
Prototype and pitching are my main research method for this project. I have experimented with animation in different software, then presented the demos with a series of questionnaires to the public via Google Forms and papers. Following the responses, I narrowed my focus into 2D Cel Shading in Cinema 4D to explore the art style which benefitted my work pace. In summary, technical skills shift quickly from time to time and there are no shortcuts to adapt one software easily at a time.
Inspiration
The song 134340 lyrics are mostly about loneliness and negativities after a broken relationship. The video captures the lyrical content of the song and visualizes dwarf planet Pluto and the Solar System in outer spaces. In connection with the meaning behind the song, Pluto had also downgraded its status as a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union in 2006, therefore it was abandoned by our own Solar System.
