Mascot Design for Pingtung County Government
The mascot design of Pingtung city has long been monkeys because the old name of Pingtung is "Ahou", which is pronounced similar to "monkey" in Mandarin. In order to break away from stereotyped thinking, the team selected brown shrike, the bird of Pingtung County, as an inspiration to give everyone a refreshing impression about Pingtung. The games cheer not only for the winners, but all athletes as they all make us proud.

Unique Properties
Pride Shrike is the mascot of 2020 National High School Athletic Games in Pingtung, Taiwan. The mascot was named "Pride Shrike" as "bird" is pronounced similar to "pride" in Taiwanese, as well as echoing with the slogan "Pingtung Pride." The games cheer not only for the winners, but all athletes as they all make people proud.

Production Technology
The mascot is drawn in both graphic and 3 dimensional way. For animated stickers, the team created animation in After Effect and generated the animated images with an APNG creation tool such as APNG Assembler.
Design Challenge
Capturing the traits of brown shrike is the most challenging aspect. The team has worked closely with ornithologists to picture the brown shrike. The face is white with the typical black "bandit-mask" through the eyes. The upper part is reddish and the lower parts are yellowish belly withrufousflanks. The tail is redder and tipped in white.
Project Duration
The project started in April 2019 and finished in December 2019, and the mascot was released and exhibited in January 2020. National High School Athletic Games will be held from July 18 to July 23 in Pingtung, Taiwan. More than 12,000 athletes from other counties and cities will participate in the event.
Operation Flow
It's the first time to promote national games as LINE animated sticker since LINE is the most popular communication software in Taiwan. In order to create stickers with novelty, here are the creative directions: 1. Promoting sports as the main purpose, the sticker of shrike integrated into all kinds of sports to show the strength and beauty of each race. 2. Communicating with young generation, as all the athletes are between 12 to 18 years old, the shrike in the sticker speaks funny buzzwords.
Research
Besides its adorkable appearance and flexible body, Pride Shrike has very distinctive personality. He is a national badminton player, in the senior year of athletic class in National Chao-Chou Senior High School. His favorite snack is Wandan red bean cake and favorite beverage is fresh lemon juice, which are both signature products in Pingtung. His objective is to show the characteristics of the host city. Pride Shrike is an important agent to promote its tourism and economy with local industries and signature products.
Inspiration
