The design process, grounded in Google's UX methodology, began with thorough user research, wireframing, and iterative prototyping. In-house development of branding, packaging, and illustrations ensured both originality and intellectual property protection. We integrated competitive analysis, empathy mapping, customer journey mapping, the Crazy Eights ideation method, and a detailed usability study plan complete with testing instruction cards.
The primary challenge was achieving a balance between developing a viable business solution and addressing the nuanced needs of consumers, particularly diverse dietary requirements. Practical constraints were carefully navigated to create an innovative approach that resolved common pain points while maintaining real-world applicability. Through an iterative design process, the user interface was refined to ensure clarity, intuitiveness, and ease of use.
The project started in March 2023 and concluded in May 2023 in Vientiane, Laos.
Users can browse a digital menu, view nutritional details, and customize their meals by adjusting ingredients. Orders are sent directly to the restaurant's kitchen system, allowing efficient meal preparation and delivery. The interface also includes a loyalty program and scheduling features for recurring orders.
The design research involved informal and semi-structured interviews with local cafe-goers, entrepreneurs, and health-conscious individuals to identify barriers to healthier eating. The methodology included qualitative data collection, direct observations, and usability testing with six participants. Key insights revealed that users valued customizable meal options and easy access to nutritional data, influencing the interface's final design and feature set.
Kinmuni was inspired by the Sharpen challenge to design a nutrition calculator interface for a local restaurant. Motivated by limited nutritional awareness and the lack of flexible meal options in Vientiane, Laos, Kinmuni was created to empower healthier eating habits while improving the restaurant's customer experience and efficiency. The design draws on insights from real users seeking convenience, dietary customization, and better nutritional education.
