Unique Properties

Picture of an old Grundig radio in Nurnberg. The mural visually resembles the scale of the radio from the 70s / 80s, with letters covered with photoluminescent paint, giving the effect of glowing in the dark, which resembles a radio turned on. The radio is 'turned on' the Langwasser district (Gemeinschaftshaus) in Nuremberg, the other place-names on the radio scale are the residents' favorite places characteristic for this district (selected by voting; marked in dark green) and their countries of origin (light green). The project is a local – district identity, located on the facade of a culture center in the center of Langwasser, allows locating popular culture and entertainment centers, and also commemorates points on the map relevant for the district. The mural was made as part of the "Betonliebe - StreetArt for Langwasser" project in cooperation with the Nowa Huta Cultural Center in Krakow.

Production Technology

Mural made on a wall in the center of Langwasser district in Nurnberg, painted with photoluminescent spray, giving the effect of glowing in the dark, which resembles a radio turned on.

Design Challenge

Photoluminescence effect. Research in cultural and postindustrial districts similar to Zablocie in Cracow in Poland, where retro-radios were produced in a communist era.

Project Duration

September 2019, Nürnberg, Germany

Operation Flow

The mural will be visible at night for some time thanks to UV lamps, like an old radio switched on with its greenish light, thanks to the photoluminescence paint glowing in darkness. People can illuminate the mural with flashlights.

Inspiration

Radiomural made in Zablocie district in Cracow, Poland - my previous project of a district identity, where old radios Unitra were produced during the communism time. Radiomural in Nuremberg is based on radios from Grundig, which were produced in Langwasser – the district where the mural was created.
